Whole Foods Market Offers Shoppers an Easy Way to Support Dedham Square

During the month of October, shoppers at the new Whole Foods Market at Legacy Place in Dedham will have the opportunity to help support the efforts of the Dedham Square Circle (DSC) to revitalize Dedham Square.  At the checkout register, customers can select a register coupon, in the amount of either $1 or $3, which will be added to their total grocery purchase.   At the end of the October, Whole Foods will contribute the funds collected through these coupons to DSC.

“It has become increasingly urgent to raise awareness of the Dedham Square Circle’s continued work to improve Dedham Square, as well as raise funds to help support our efforts,” said Amy Haelsen, DSC Executive Director.  “In order for Dedham Square to survive and to thrive, we need to elevate the level of interest in revitalizing the Square.”   Haelsen noted that with the downturn in the economy as well as increased competition from new retailers and restaurants in the area, the long term viability of the Square’s economy is in question.   “A strong and vibrant downtown benefits the entire community,” said Haelsen.  “Every resident, business and property owner has a vested interest in revitalizing the Square.”

Among DSC’s major initiatives to improve the Square is its Sign and Façade Improvement Program which provides matching funds to property owners and merchants seeking to make physical upgrades to their properties and businesses.   DSC will also continue to partner with the Town to seek funding for major streetscape improvements including improved traffic flow, safer crosswalks, wider and brick-lined sidewalks and gas lamps.  Through its “Destination Dedham” campaign, DSC is promoting, both locally and regionally, all that the Square has to offer with a targeted advertising campaign to attract new visitors.   In addition, DSC is planning events and activities such as the weekly  farmers market to draw more people to the Square, addressing parking concerns and offering technical assistance to merchants through free workshops.

“We are so grateful for this Whole Foods is providing to us,” said Haelsen.  “They have been a terrific example of what it means to be a good corporate citizen, to give back to the community in which you operate.”  Haelsen added that last year Whole Foods Market donated a new portable sink valued at $1,000. to the Dedham Farmers Market.

The Dedham Square Circle is a non-profit organization committed to invigorating Dedham Square by increasing its economic prosperity, promoting its rich history, arts and culture, and aesthetically enhancing the Square's physical environment to benefit the entire community.
