Here we are, already half way through February. Where does the time go? The Dedham Square Circle team has been busy behind-the-scenes planning for a busy 2012. Next month we’ll kick off our “First Thursdays” monthly promotion in which merchants will stay open late the first Thursday of every month with special events, activities and entertainment. This will launch our “Dedham Square - Open for Business” campaign, a massive PR and marketing effort to promote the Square throughout theDedham Square Improvement Project. Though no start date has been set for the project to get underway, we are eager to kick-off the First Thursday promotion and look forward to our first one on Thursday, March 1st. The Dedham Institution for Savings Foundation has awarded the Dedham Farmers Market with a $5,000 grant to underwrite our 2012 season. We sincerely appreciate this generous gift which will help us cover costs to operate and promote the market this year. Happy Birthday Wishes – It’s hard to believe that it’s been a year since Henry Rocket Reynolds, son of Peter Reynolds and Diana Gaikazova, landed in Dedham Square! Warm wishes to “The Rocket” for a very happy first birthday celebration. It won’t be long now until he follows in the footsteps of his parents and has his sights set on opening his own biz in the Square!

 

Opening Day! - In just two weeks, Ron’s Ice Cream will reopen for the season! It’s a sure sign that spring is just around the corner! Yippee!

 

Free Family Flick - The Dedham Community House will be hosting another of its FREE Family Movie nights featuring the animated movie "Curious George" on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. Grab your friends and family, some chairs and blankets and head on down to the DCH Gym. Enjoy complimentary refreshments, generously provided by Donahue Real Estate.

 

  
Square Jam - The Square was jammin’ last weekend as crowds flocked to the theatre to catch “The Descendents” and “The Artist” before the Oscars on February 26th. Both films won Golden Globes for Best Picture and Best Actor and are nominated for multiple Oscars. There wasn’t a seat to be had in any of the Square eateries! One of our roving Scoop reporters, who was out and about in the Square Saturday night, told us she met lots of people visiting from other towns throughout the area.   Dedham Square continues to be a regional destination! Coming soon to the Dedham Community Theatre is “A Dangerous Method” featuring Keira Knightly and Viggo Mortensen. A must see!

Like to Bike? Dedham Bike has extended its winter special on Tune Up packages and more through the end of February. Magically Delicious - Starting on March 7, Salem Food Market will host a “Kids Night” every Wednesday night. $3.99 kids meals and free fun featuring magician John Henry who has performed in Dedham for over 20 years. Head over to SFM for some great eats and some good old fashioned fun!

School Vacation Destination
  – The Dedham Community House Martial Arts program will host their Ninja Camp on Monday, Feb. 20, from 9- 1. Participants will learn all about the ancient ways of the Ninja including history, weapons and techniques. DCH will also be running another edition of their weeklong school vacation program. Kids grades K-5 participate in activities that include sports, arts & crafts, science and more. Run daily from 9-4, the group will end the week off with a winter cookout! Crafty Central - Thursday is Sit & Stitch at SheepSkate Yarn & Crafts from 6:30-8:30. Everyone is welcome, and it’s FREE!  Plenty of fun to be had for kids at SheepSkate over school vacation.  A “Learn to Knit” class every week day from 11-12 as well as a “Learn to Crochet” every day from 3-4 p.m. Other classes include needlepoint, duct tape art, finger knitting and beading hemp. You Are What You Eat - Our friends at Granite Family Chiropractic and Nutrition, located next to Dedham Bike at 399 Washington St., are hosting a free Nutrition for Weight Loss Seminar at the Dedham Public Library, 43 Church St. on Wed. , Feb. 22nd from 7-8:30pm. All are welcome!

Music Notes - The Dedham School of Music is now accepting applications and enrolling for the Spring Semester. Private lessons in piano, guitar, suzuki and traditional instruction in string instruments, and more are offered. Check out the introduction to piano class for 5-6 year olds. Just in from NYC  – New jewelry, scarves and handbags at The Dedham Exchange. Lots of locally hand crafted items, art and gourmet goodies as well.  Did you know? All proceeds from The Exchange, a nonprofit gift shop, benefit dozens of local community organizations like Dedham Square Circle. Shopping there is twice as nice!

Musical Art – More new art is adorning the walls of Square businesses. Stop in to Mocha Java to check out original work by Dedham Square Artist Guild members, including Kerry Hawkins’ photography and Lisa W.B. Walker’s pottery, which are also for sale.  Also make sure to see artist Cindy Mootz’s paintings at Deli After Dark.  More art news - DSAG now has a new blog! Visit www.dsagart.com.
