Farmers Market a Smash

Colby / Daily News staff Daily News Transcript DEDHAM —Holding a bag of newly bought sourdough bread, Dianne Bauer compared shopping at a supermarket, where she might only talk to a cashier, to the Dedham farmers market, which opened for the summer yesterday. At the market, Bauer said, she probably already had had eight conversations with friends, strangers, and state Rep. Paul McMurtry.
"Where else do you get to see your state rep chewing his veggies?" she remarked, as McMurtry passed by, munching on snap peas. "It's a great community experience."
Bauer, 67, a retired school librarian who lives in Oakdale, picked up the sourdough from Clear Flour Bread of Brookline - a new market vendor this year - and was thinking about getting some strawberries.
"We try not to forget when it's Wednesday, and plan our day around coming here," she said, accompanied to the market by her husband, Brad.
At 12:35 p.m., McMurtry officially opened the market's second season by ringing a brown ceremonial cowbell as organizers and Town Administrator William Keegan cheered. A steady stream of customers came by during the first few hours of the market, held in the town permit lot next to the Keystone Lot on Eastern Avenue.
The market will take place there on Wednesdays from noon to 6 p.m. through the end of October.
Dedham Square Circle hosts the farmers market. It was the brainchild last year of Louise Reohr and Adina Astor, who said they started planning this year's season in January.
